I Knit: a shop with a pet!

No Sábado tinha planeado ir até à I Knit e mais tarde à Drink, Shop & Do, mas troquei as voltas e quando cheguei à primeira já era bastante tarde - quase à hora de fechar! Não faz mal, pois oportunidades não faltarão :-)

A I Knit é um espaço onde apetece estar :-) A profusão de cor entra-nos logo pelos olhos, o que me deixou um pouco confusa de início, mas depois habituei-me. O melhor é lá ir com algo em mente, pois a escolha é tão grande que o mais certo é ficarmos perdidas entre fios, livros e acessórios (BTW: comprei umas agulhas de madeira, mas cúbicas - nunca tinha visto! - que já experimentei e recomendo). Tenho pena que já fosse noite e estivesse a fechar, pois isso inibiu-me um pouco de ficar lá mais tempo e ver tudo ao pormenor.

Aqui não falta nada, nem mesmo uma mascote!!! :-)

Last Saturday I had planned a visit to I Knit and then a tea at Drink, Shop & Do, but I had to do other things and when I got to the first place it was too late - it was nearly closing! It's ok, because I'll have other opportunities :-)

I Knit feels a bit like home :-) It's so colourful that my eyes were a bit confused until they got used to it. The best thing is to go there with something in mind, otherwise you'll feel lost among the variety of yarns, books and accessories (BTW: I bought a pair of wooden needles that are cubic - I had never seen such a thing! - which I've tried and highly recommend). It was a shame that it was already dark and the shop was about to close, so I didn't feel comfortable to stay longer and go through everythin in there.

There's nothing missing in this shop, not even a pet!!!:-)

Ceramic Art London 2012

Se há algo que não falta nesta cidade é pouco que fazer! Há sempre exposições, feiras, concertos, acontecimentos que nos "obrigam" a sair de casa e correr para aqui ou para ali, isto para não falar nos parques que convidam a longos passeios pelas tardes que já estão "quentes" - é que 12 graus aqui têm o sabor dos 20 de Portugal :-P

Assim, e como planeado, ontem fui visitar a Ceramic Art London 2012. Fiquei confusa quanto ao poder ou não tirar fotos, por isso optei por não o fazer e trouxe alguns postais dos meus expositores preferidos.

There's always something to do in this city! There are alwyas exhibitions, fairs, concerts, things that make us go outside and run from spot to spot, this not to mention the wondeful parks where you can just wander around during the afternoon - and now the tempreatures are going up!

So, as planned, yesterday I visited the Ceramic Art London 2012. I was confused if I could take pictures or not, so I brought some postcards from my favourite exhibitors.

Se gosto de oferecer presentes, é claro que também gosto de os receber, especialmente quando se vê que são escolhidos com a certeza de que irei apreciar. Poucas são as pessoas capazes de me surpreender e agradar com presentes, especialmente aquelas fora do circuito da família e dos amigos mais próximos, no entanto este mimo foi TOP! Bem sei que a lembrança vale tudo, mas uma destas vale muito mais :-) Obrigada!

Sebastião Salgado dispensa apresentações, mas o que eu não sabia era que ele mesmo tinha tido um "mestre": Cristiano Mascaro, cujas fotos estão nesta bolsa e agenda. E nem de propósito, no próximo fim-de-semana irei a Birmingham à Focus on Imaging 2012 - espero ver e aprender algumas coisas!

If I like to give presents, it is obvious that I also like to receive them, especially when you feel that they have been chosen thinking about you. There aren't many people, appart from family and close friends, who can really please me with a present, but this gift was really TOP! I know that what counts is the intention, but something like this is worth much more :-) Thank you!

Sebastião Salgado doesn't need any introduction but what I didn't kow was that he had a "teacher": Cristiano Mascaro, whose photos are in this pouch and diary. And by coincidence guess where I'm going next weekend? To Birmingham to visit Focus on Imaging 2012 - I hope to see and to learn a few things!

Markets in London

Desde que cheguei já tive a oportunidade de visitar diversos mercados, não só os que vêm nos guias como sendo grandes atracções turísticas mas também outros, em que só sabe deles quem vive nas zonas. Assim, achei que seria giro compilar aqui a lista daqueles onde já fui e a opinão com que fiquei deles.

Começo pelo mais famoso de todos:

Portobello Road Market: Além do que se vende por lá é uma atracção turística por si só. Quem quiser ver alguma coisa terá de ir cedo, pois a partir das 11 da manhã começa a ser difícil romper a multidão. A meio da rua começam a surgir as bancas de frutas, legumes, pão e bolos e prepara-se ao vivo algumas iguarias para os mais esfomeados :-) Vale pena visitar as pequenas lojas nas ruas perpendiculares.

Borough Market: estive lá uma vez, mas tenho de voltar. Os cheiros a comida acabada de fazer misturam-se no ar e as frigideiras gigantes a fervilhar abrem o apetite à pessoa menos gulosa.

Spitafields Market fui lá duas vezes, a um sábado e depois, convencida pela Sofia, a um domingo. Confesso que não fiquei fã e terão de passar alguns meses até que volte. Não é mau, mas desiludiu-me um bocado - serei eu demasiado exigente?

Petticoat Lane Market: mesmo ao lado de Spitafields - MEDO!!! É definitivamente para cortar do roteiro.

Picadilly Market fica mesmo ao lado da Waterstones no pátio de uma igreja e tem diversas bancas de coisas mais ou menos artesanais.

Partridges Food Market: aos sábados esta praça torna-se o centro das atenções da King's Road repleta de pequenas bancas com petiscos dos quatro cantos do mundo - aqui é possível encontrar pasteis de nata originais - originais pela sua originalidade, não pela sua origem, pois têm franboesas e arandos!!!

Columbia Road Flower Market: para quem gosta de flores este mercado é de visita obrigatória; o único problema é que apetece comprar flores sem dizer chega - são lindas e a preços incríveis. Nesta mesma rua há um conjunto de lojas também muito apetecível de visitar :-)

Since I got here I've had the opportunity to visit several markets, not only the well known from the world but also the ones that only the locals know about it. Therefore I thought it would be nice to post about them.

Starting by the most famous of all:

Portobello Road Market, in Notting Hill: here you can find almost anything, from antiques to flowers... It's crowded. Very crowded! It happens every Saturday and if you get there after 11 o'clock I assure you it's going to be difficult to get through... 
Borough Market: I was there once but I have to come back :-) The smell of fresh made food, the vegetables and the fish are wonderfull. Oh, and the view of giant paellas ready to be served? Delicious!
Spitafields Market:  I've been there twice in different days of the week. The second time I went because Sofia convinced me to, but honnestly I wasn''t fascinated by it. It's not bad, but it's not the sort of place I would go back next week. There you can find handmade stuff, second hand clothes, soaps, vintage items...
Petticoat Lane Market: This is right next to Spitafields, but it's not even worth talk about it. Just don't go there!!! 
Partridges Food Market: every Saturday this square becomes a main attraction for everyone that walks along the King's Road full of stalls each with a different deli from all over the wold. 
Columbia Road Flower Market: on Sundays this street becomes a beautiful garden with all sort of flowers at very good prices. If you go there, don't miss the shops behind the stalls :-)

Maternity

No domingo perdi conta às horas que estive no V&A e saí de lá já quase à hora de fechar. Apesar de ser a terceira vez que lá vou desde que cheguei, fiquei com a sensação de que tinha visto muito, mas ao mesmo tempo que não tinha visto nada. É um mundo que não se esgota!

Fiquei fascinada com as imensas peças dedicadas ao tema da maternidade e só por isso escolhi partilhar convosco três das que mais gostei - são peças "mortas", no entanto transmitem um carinho e uma vida que algumas vezes não se vê em cenas reais...

Last Sunday I got lost in time at the V&A and it was dark when I left the museum. This was my third time there since I got there, and once again I've got the feeling that there's still a lot to be seen. It's a never ending place!

I was fascinated by all the artwork dedicated to maternity and just for that I chose three pictures to shar with you - they are "dead" works, but are so tender that are are more lively than, sometimes, reality...

Mail Day

Hoje é dia de ir ao correio! Além do presente para a Teresa, seguem também alguns postais para amigos e familia - é que apesar de todas as modernices que nos põem em contacto, um postal e uma carta têm sempre a sua graça (acho que me estou a deixar contagiar pela mania dos postais que se vive por aqui...).  

Mail day! Not only I have Teresa's present to send but also some postcards for family and friends - despite all the modern means of communication it's alwys nice to receive a postcard or a letter (I think I'm being influenced by this crush on postcards that the British have...)

Knitted Heart

Aprendi com a minha mãe que quando não há que fazer, inventa-se! E quando os recursos não abundam - aiii que saudades do meu atelier, da minha máquina de costura e dos meus tecidos... - inventa-se ainda mais, certo? 

Entre gorros e carimbos, ontem resolvi fazer um coração de tricot :-) Procurei no Google por um molde e depois escolhi um que fosse rápido de fazer. Apesar do atraso ainda dá para comemorar o dia de São Valentim :-)))

I've learnt from my mother that when there's nothing to do, we can always make something up! And when the materials are not available - ohhh I miss my study, my sewing machine and my fabrics... - the imagination has to work harder, right?

Between hats and stamps, yesterday I decided to knit a heart :-) I googled for some instructions and then I chose one that was easy and fast to knit. Despite being late can I celebrate Valentine's?

Pom-pom girl's hat

Depois de um azul, um verde, e depois deste um côr-de-rosa :-) Desta vez para uma menina. A cada gorro que faço acrescento-lhe algo diferente, sendo que desta vez fiz os "tapa orelhas" em malha de liga e no final acrescentei-lhe um pom-pom no topo. Não vos consigo mostrar, mas depois de usado ficou tão engraçado :-)

Nas agulhas já está mais um, igualmente azul escuro. E com tantas lãs com que vou ficando, acho que a seguir me vou atrever a experimentar uns motivos simples de fair isle.

After a navy blue hat a green one was knitted and after that this pink one :-) This time my client was a girl. Each hat I make I add something different - in this one the ear flaps were knitted in garter stitch and on the top I put a lovely pom-pom. I cannot show you how it looks on, but I assure you that it looks great :-)

On my needles a fourth hat is coming to shape - again in navy blue. And with so many left-overs I think I'm going to try a simle fair isle pattern.

Another favourite shop: Blade Rubber Stamps

No Sábado, a caminho do British Museum encontrei, por mero acaso, mais uma loja de perder a cabeça, a Blade Rubber Stamps,  desta vez totalmente dedicada a scrapbooking e carimbos. Além das centenas de carimbos que aqui é possível encontrar há livros, ink pads e muitas outras coisas e ao sábado é possível frequentar os mais variados workshops.

Trouxe comigo um carving block  para fazer umas experiências e ontem à noite estive entretida a fazer carimbos :-)

Last Saturday, on my way to the British Museum I found a shop to go crazy about, the Blade Rubber Stamps where you can find anything you can imagine for scrapbooking and rubberstamping. There there are hundreds of different stamps, books, ink pads and many other things and every Saturday there are different workshops that one can attend.

I bought a carving block and last night I spent a few hours making stamps :-)

An afternoon at the British Museum

A fila para comprar bilhetes para a exposição do David Hockney era enorme e como não me apeteceu esperar mudei de planos e fui até ao British Museum - a sorte é que há sempre uma alternativa! Não sei quantas horas lá estive e não vi tudo - é evidente que houve salas que gostei mais do que outras, ainda assim tenho de lá voltar. 

Fiquei estupefacta com a cobertura de vidro e aço - a sério, fiquei mesmo de boca aberta! É daquelas coisas que ultrapassa qualquer fotografia - é lindo! (às tantas sentei-me no chão só para ficar a olhar, literalmente, para o ar).

The queue for David Hockney's exhibition was too long and could't be bodered to wait, so I changed plans and zoomed to the British Museum - luckily there's always a good aternative! I don't know for how long I stayed there and I haven't seen all - there were rooms I liked better than others, even so I have to go back.

I was really astonished by the glass and steel roof - honnestly, it's really amazing! It's impossible to describe and to show how beautiful that is! I had to sit on the fllor for a while, rise my eyes and just stared at it...

De todas as fotos que tirei foi difícil eleger uma para colocar aqui, mas porque tem a ver com o blog, escolhi esta imagem que representa um pojagi, o que significa qualquer coisa como "pano para fazer embrulhos". 

Quanto à ultima foto...bem, é só por piada :-)))

Nota: A Ana acabou de deixar um comentário precioso com três informações que me eram desconhecidas: "Ainda não conheço o Great Court mas por si só acho que vou ter de lá voltar para admirar essa obra fantástica do Norman Foster. Sabias que é a maior praça coberta do mundo?" ( o site do BM diz que é a maior praça coberta da Europa). Obrigada, Ana!
 
Note: Ana has just left a precious comment to this post with information which I didn't know: " I still don't know the Great Court but just for that I'll have to go back and admire that master piece by Norman Foster. Did you know that this is the largest covered square in the world?" (the BM museum site says it's the largest in Europe). Thank you Ana!

Pink dwarf's hat

O sucesso do gorro verde foi tal que já estou a fazer um outro, mas cor-de-rosa. Desta vez fiz as "orelhas" em malha de liga, pois achei que a lã lisa assim o pedia. Mais uma vez estou a usar uma lã Rowan cuja composição é 75% lã e 25% alpaca.

The green dwarf's hat was a master success, therefore I'm already knitting another one, but in a girly colour: pink! This time I made the ear flaps in garter stitch. Once again i'm using a Rowan yarn made of 75% wool and 25% alpaca.

Enquanto vagueio pelas ruas de Londres há sempre algumas pessoas que não me saem da cabeça, cada uma pela sua razão, e algumas pela mesma. É o caso da Sofia, do André e da Susana :-) E volta e meia lá estou eu a tirar a máquina da mala para registar algo que me lembra deles - fico com as mãos em pedra, mas vale a pena :-)

Há umas semanas vi estes sapatos que gritavam Branco Prata e ontem à noite dei de caras com este vestido Simplesmente Branco!!! Não são maravilhosos?

While I wander around the streets of London there are always people on my mind, each for its reason and some for the same. It's the case of Sofia, André and Susana :-) And when I have the opportunity I take my camera out of my bag and shoot a photo for them - my hands get frozen but it's for a good reason :-)

A few weeks ago I saw these shoes and they were shouting Branco Prata and last night I came across this Simplesmente Branco dress. Aren't they stunning?

3500 Facebook fans giveaway

Quando vi este número aproximar-se nem queria acreditar, mas aconteceu e para celebrar quero oferecer um pequeno presente. Ao contrário do que é habitual não será nada feito por mim, pois aqui não tenho os recursos necessários, a não ser para tricotar, por isso decidi-me por algo que sei que todos os leitores do Pano p'ra Mangas gostam: uma revista! When I saw that Pano p'ra Mangas was reaching 3500 fans on facebook I could hardly believe and to celebrate it I'm carrying a small giveaway. Usually I give something handmade, but here I don't have the means to sew anything so I chose something I know everybody likes: a magazine! I chose one that could be found in Portugal (well, I've never seen it...) as the majority of my readers are portuguese :-) and that was full of beautiful pictures and projects.

The March issue is full of lovely projects, just as the February was and that I keep on my bedside table :-) and it's made of two magazines. Who would like to have it?

A spoonful of Love

Há dias estive a brincar com a lente que recebi no Natal, pois ainda não me habituei a tirar fotos com ela  e aproveitei o que tinha à mão para o fazer :-) 

Os m&m's são propícios a ínumeras coisas e no meu portfolio não podem faltar corações, por isso o resultado foi mais ou menos este (mais ou menos, pois tenho muitas mais fotos...).

A few days ago I spent a couple of hours playing with the lens I received for Christmas, as I haven't got used to it yet, so I used what I had on the table to shot some photos :-)

You can make hundreds of things from m&m's and in my portfolio I always have to include hearts, therefore the result was more or less this one (I've got many other ones...) 

Another favourite shop: Ray-Stitch

A conselho da Luísa, ontem fui novamente até à zona Norte, de propósito para encontrar a Ray-Stitch e só vos posso dizer que valeu a pena a viagem! Fiquei rendida e se eu tivesse uma loja, seria tal e qual esta eheheh: crafts & cakes fazem uma combinação perfeita!

É um espaço difícil de fotografar, pois é estreito e comprido, ainda assim, creio que conseguem ficar com uma ideia do espaço.

Aproveitei para fazer umas compras e fiquei com este livro debaixo de olho. Se gostam deste tipo de lojas e vierem a Londres, nesta mesma zona há, pelo menos quatro: a Loop, a The Make Lounge, esta e a CassArt - não tem tecidos nem lãs, mas para quem gosta de pintar é o sitio ideal para se ir.

Last week Luisa told me I should visit Ray-Stitch, so yesterday I went again to the North area of London and it was worth the journey. If I had a shop this would be it: crafts & cakes are the perfect combination!

The shop is narrow and long which makes it difficult to take photos, but I think you can get a gist of what it looks like.

I did a little shopping but I have to come back to buy this book. If you ever come to London and like this sort of shops, take the tube to Angel and visit Loop, The Make Lounge, Ray-Stitch and Cass Art - they are all just a few minutes apart.

Another boy's hat

Há só quatro semanas que cheguei a Londres, no entanto há alturas em que as saudades já apertam e o facto de estar cá sozinha não facilita, por isso vou buscar conforto àquilo que, também em casa me faz feliz, neste momento o tricot.

Este foi o segundo gorro em menos de uma semana e ainda tenho mais dois para fazer - é que não há como recusar o pedido de uma criança :-) - e assim os serões são menos monótonos e menos solitários.

Usei uma lã Debbie Bliss, com uma mistura de lã e angorá e o modelo foi uma adaptação de um que encontrei no Ravelry - não tinha agulhas de duas pontas, por isso tricotei numas normais e fiz as reduções nos sitios que me pareceram lógicas.

It's only four weeks since I arrived in the UK and I'm starting to miss home. The fact that I came by myself doesn't help, so I find comfort in the things I love the most, which even at home make mevery happy, in this case, knitting.

This was the second hat I knitted in less than a week, and I have more two to make - one can not deny a request from a child :-) - and this way the evenings are less monotonous and less solitary.

I used a Debbie Bliss yarn, which is a mixture of wool and angora, and the pattern was inspired by one I saw on Ravelry - I didn't have any double pointed needles so I knitted it in normal needles and made the decreases wher I thought they would be necessary.
