London map fabric

Quando há uns meses comprei este tecido com a planta de Londres em Campo de Ourique não fazia a mínima ideia que o destino me traria para Londres. Na altura até pensei fazer uns marcadores de mesa com ele, mas acabei por não fazer nada. 

Assim, pedi à minha mãe que me fizesse uma mala e ma trouxesse quando cá viesse. Além da mala ainda me fez uma bolsinha para colocar aquelas coisas que andam sempre comigo: tesoura, fita cola, canetas... O interior só podia ser de bolinhas :-) Ficou gira, não ficou?

Obrigada, mãe!

A few months ago when I bought this London map fabric nothing was telling me that now I would be living in London. By that time I thought about maaking a couple of placemats but I've never done anything with it.

This way I asked my mother to make me a shoulder bag for her to bring when she came round. So she made it! And she also made a pouch which is very useful to carry all the stuff I always have with me: a pair of scissors, tape, pens ...For the inside she chose a polka dotted fabric It looks nice, doesn't it?

Columbia Road Flower Market

A primeira vez que fui oa Columbia Road Flower Market estava frio e quase desesperei para lá chegar. Já dessa vez tinha ficado rendida ao encanto das cores e à variedade de flores e plantas que lá se encontram, isto para não mencionar o preço.

Entretanto já se passaram uns meses e quis ir espreitar as cores de verão que este mercado nos oferece. Apetece trazer tudo! Desde as flores mais simples, às de vaso para ornamentar janelas e parapeitos ou às de corte (ai as peónias...).

The first time I went to Columbia Road Flower Market it was cold and I got lost before I found it.

By then I fell in love with the colours, the variety of flowers and plants, this not to mention the prices.

Meanwhile, a few months have gone by and I wanted to come back to look at the summer colours around there.

I wanted to bring everything! From the most of the common flowers, the ones in vases to put outside in the balcony or some other ones to put around the house (and oh, the peonies...)

Another favourite shop: J & B The Shop

Já tinha lido sobre esta loja aqui e numa revista cujo nome não me recordo na Mollie Makes (obrigada, Sara!) mas só hoje tive oportunidade de lá ir, pois fui também ao Columbia Road Flower Market (já lá tinha estado quando cá cheguei, mas quis ir novamente para experimentar as cores de Verão, as quais partilharei convosco durante a semana).

Mas de regresso à loja...Se vos disser que apetece trazer o recheio completo da loja não estou a mentir - é mesmo assim! Rendas antigas, outras reinventadas, peças cujo uso foi alterado, postais, ilustrações... um mundo delicioso!

Este é, sem dúvida, um ponto de visita obrigatória numa vinda a Londres, de preferência a um Domingo para juntar o melhor de vários mundos :-)

 I had already read about this shop in this book and ain some magazine which nme I cannot remember in Mollie Makes (thank you Sara!) but only today I had the opportunity to go there as I also went to the Columbia Road Flower Market (I went there when I arrived in London, but today I wanted to try the colours of Summer, which I will share with you during the week).

But going back to the shop... If I tell you that it feels like you want to bring everything from there I'm not lying to you - it's really like that! Antique laces and crochet, other that have been reinvented, postcards, illustrations ... a world full of treats!

This is no doubt, a spot to visit if you come to London, preferably on a Sunday so you can enjoy the best of several worlds. :-)

Please do not disturb

Há dias em que preciso estar comigo, e hoje foi um desses dias. Por todas as razões e por nenhuma em particular - não, não estou triste, muito pelo contrário! :-) E como o tempo está maravilhoso, ontem à noite fiz um rascunho do que seria o meu dia de hoje, e planeei um passeio de barco pelo canal que liga Camdem a Little Venice. Quero fazer este percurso novamente, mas a pé - hoje já não consegui fazê-lo.

Assim, antes de sair, preparei o saco com a manta, o crochet, um livro e um caderno para que, depois do passeio pudesse apanhar um pouco de sol num qualquer espaço vazio entre as muitas árvores e os milhares de pessoas que estavam em Hyde Park.

Missão cumprida! :-) ... com a t-shirt marcada nos braços!!!

There are days that I need to be with myself, and today it was one of those days. For all the reasons you can name and for none in particular - no, I'm not sad, much the other way around! :-) And as the weather is wonderful last night I made a draft of my day: I planned a boat trip through the canal that takes us from Camdem to Little Venice. Next time I want to walk this path - today I couldn't do it.

So, before I left home this morning I packed my London quilt, my crochet, a book a a notebook - all this for the after journey, somewhere in Hyde Park where I could find an empty space between the trees and among the thousands of people around there.

Mission accomplished!:-)... and with a "t-shirt tan" on my arms!!!

Books

Onde quer que esteja tenho de me fazer acompanhar de livros e além dos que vou buscar à biblioteca, já tenho uma pequena colecção, apenas destes quase cinco meses de estadia em Londres- o difícil é não ter mais, pois as idas às livrarias são sempre uma tentação. Os livros fazem-me sentir em casa e são um bom meio de construir a minha zona de conforto.

Falta um aqui nesta pilha, que deixei em Portugal para que a minha mãe e a minha irmã o vissem.

Wherever I am I need to have some books around me and now i have not only the ones that I bring from the library but also some I bought over the last (nearly) five months of living in London - what is difficult is not to have more, as going to the bookshop is always very tempting. Books make me feel at home and they are a good way to build my comfort zone up.

There's one missing in this pile, which I left in Portugal for my mother and sister to look at.

WIP: granny squares

A manta está a começar a tomar forma! Depois de algumas indecisões sobre como unir as rosetas, optei por esta, uma vez que as outras duas (a + b) que me sugeriram obrigavam a uma alteração significativa no aspecto final da composição, uma vez que tinha de acrescentar mais uma volta aos quadrados. O avesso pode não ficar tão bonito, mas quase não se notam os pontos de união.

Há livros que aconselham a que se "bloqueie" (não encontro, em portugûes o termo correcto...) cada peça antes de a unir, pois ajuda a que a forma se mantenha, mas eu não consegui esperar...

My throw is begining to look like something! After some hesitations on how to join the pieces I decided to use this method, once the other two (a + b) would oblige me to make significant changes to the final look of the granny squares as I would have to add an extra row around them. It may not be as nice on the wrong side but you can hardly notice the stitches.

There are books that advise you to block the squares before they are sewn together, because it helps to keep and correct their shape, but I couldn't wait for that...

WIP: granny squares

A cada roseta que faço tenho a sensação de que a faço melhor e mais certinha ... e mais depressa! Já gastei os três novelos que comprei ( e hoje já renovei o stock) e ao todo tenho quase 28 peças feitas - ficou mesmo só a faltar uma pontinha de linha...

Agora tenho de aprender como as unir. Já andei a ver alguns tutoriais e dos que vi experimentei dois, mas nenhum me agradou. O terceiro passo é decidir que esquema usar para formar um padrão, e a quarta etapa é não me cansar de fazer quadradinhos de crochet para fazer uma manta :-)))  - este é o desafio maior!!!

For each granny square I make I've got the feeling that I make it better and faster! I've already used the three balls I bought in first place (today I bought some more) and in total I have nearly 28 squares - i missed a bit of yarn to complete the 28th...

Now I have to learn how to sew7join them together. I've looked into some tutorials, tried two of them but I didn´t like neither. The third step on this process is to choose which pattern to choose and the fourth stage is not to get tired of making hundreds of granny squares to make a throw :-))) and this is the biggest challenge!!!

Summer infinity scarves

Aquando da minha ida a Portugal fiz, ainda estas echarpes de verão, usando o mesmo modelo das de inverno: sem pontas! Aconchegam o pescoço nos dias mais frescos - embora em Portugal as temperaturas já peçam o biquini! - sem aquecer.

As fotos foram um verdadeiro desafio - quase superado - pois para peças deste género é, normalmente, a minha irmã que as fotografa :-) Como sempre, estão disponíveis na página do FB.

When I went back to Portugal, last Easter, I also made these summer scarves, using the same pattern as the winter ones. These are 100% cotton and are perfect for those chilly days when you want to feel cosy without being hot.

Taking the photos was an adventure as in these sort of occasions it's my sister who shots the pictures. As usual they are available at my FB page.

Regent's Park

Todos os dias descubro cantos novos nesta cidade que me deixam fascinada e a passagem das estações aqui é realmente fabulosa - não só aqui, é evidente! em casa também a sinto, especialmente quando as laranjeiras estão em flor e o ar fica invadido por um aroma inconfundível. 

Esta semana caminhei até Regent's Park, um parque cheio de árvores frondosas, flores, aves e plantas imensas. Tenho de lá voltar com as minhas aguarelas, um cesto de pique-nique e a minha manta de Londres :-)

Everyday I find new and wonderful spots in this town that fill my heart with joy and the passing of the seasons here is really amazing - not only here, it's obvious! I love to feel it at home, especailly when the orange trees bloom and the air gets that lovely scent in the evening.

This week I went for a walk to Regent's Park, a park full of leafy trees, flowers, birds and countless different plants. I must come back with my watercolours, a pic-nic baske and my London quilt :-)

Little Venice

Ainda não conhecia esta zona de Londres e na segunda-feira (feriado cá), mesmo debaixo de chuva ( e friooooooo...) fui passear e ver os canais e os seus barcos coloridos. Em muitos deles funcionam empresas, restaurantes e cafés, algumas casas e outros servem para passeios ao longo do canal que vai desde aqui até Camdem. 

Esta é uma zona longe do bulício do centro e com um charme indescritível - não me importava de morar ali!

 

I hadn't been to this part of London until last Monday (bank holiday), and despite the rain (and the cold....)  I went for a walk in the area and see the canals and the cheerful boats. Many of them house companies, restaurants, cafes and some houses, others are for cruises from here to Camdem.

This is a beautiful and charming area far from the busy centre and where I wouldn't mind living!

Book review: dottie angel

Sabem aqueles livros que são amor à primeira vista? Eu sei que sabem do que estou a falar! Este foi um caso desses...

Vi o dottie angel há dois meses na Ray Stitch e desde então não me saiu da cabeça. Além de ser, graficamente, um espanto, o seu conteúdo é delicioso, pois não é um "catálogo de projectos", mas quase um romance recheado de histórias e salpicado de tutoriais. É ou não obrigatório em qualquer estante? No sábado tive de ir a Islington e como estava perto da Ray Stitch ouvi a dottie a chamar por mim :-)

Sem querer parecer pretensiosa eu e a Tif partilhamos alguns gostos em comum: CORAÇÕES! a palavra LOVE, pontas de crochet (haviam de ver a colecção da minha mãe!), entre outras coisas que ainda estou a descobrir.

Se quiserem conhecer a Tif, caso não a conheçam, entrem no seu blog e viagem no seu mundo de quase fantasia que tem direito a um dicionário próprio :-)

Do you know those sort of books that make butterflies on your stomach? I know you know what I?m talking about! This was love at firts sight...

I spotted dottien angel a couple of months ago when I first went to Ray Stitch and since then I can't take it out of my head. This is not an ordinary crafts book like a a catalogue of projects that one can make, it's more of a romance filled with nice stories and some tutorials. And above all it's so beautiful to look at... Now tell me isn't it compulsary to have it on your shelf? Last Saturday I had to go to Islington, where Ray Stich is and I could hear dottie calling my name :-)

Going through the book makes me think that dottie and I have a few things in common: a crush for HEARTS, the word LOVE, crochet edges (you shoud see my mother's collection!), among other things that I'm finding out.
